The expected daily tonnage was never obtained, primarily because the main ore chute became clogged frequently, and mining had to be suspended until the clog was blasted loose and the chute cleared in an unending struggle to keep the ore running. No doubt this problem could have been cured in time, but for the appearance on the scene of Japanese troops.
This was range land, with nothing but grass and cattle in sight to the horizon. We were without a map or a compass, but even with these items we would have been lost in this territory bereft of landmarks. We had no choice but to walk in the direction the sun told us was the way to Asid Gulf. Once there, we would follow the coast Evacuation 27 until we came to a town, hopefully a town without a Japanese garrison. Even then, we knew we would be hard-pressed to find a boatman who would sail us to Panay, for our pooled wealth was less than fifty pesos—twenty-five American dollars.
Everyone had a different idea about where to go and what to do. Most of us agreed that the best bet was to head for the IXL Mine, one of our company’s operations twelve kilometers southeast, a few miles off the coastal highway at the edge of the bondoc, the forest jungle. Because of our joint weekly parties, we knew all the Americans who lived there. We decided to make that the first evacuation point. However, to get there meant that most of the way we had to travel toward the Japanese landing area, on the same highway the enemy would be using if they were to move toward the Aroroy harbor.
