Long live the British leisured classes. Faiz came to London a few weeks before his seventieth birthday. ‘You have reached the biblically-ordained age of three score and ten,’ I said to him. Someone asked him who the rather personable lady he had taken to lunch a day earlier was. ‘Before I disclose the identity of the personable lady in question,’ Faiz replied, ‘may I state for the record that I have retired from this department,’ Naturally, nobody believed him.
