Each Auxiliary squadron was given a block number from which numbers were allocated to officers as they were commissioned into those units. It requires to be recalled that Auxiliary officers were commissioned into squadrons, and not into the AAF as a whole, in the same way that Territorial Army officers were commissioned into specific regiments, and not into the TA as a whole. Indeed, until 1938 when an Auxiliary officer transferred from one squadron to another, he relinquished his old number and received a new one from the squadron he was joining.
