Keep in mind that even with the Sun up, the lunar sky looks black because there is virtually no air to scatter sunlight and obscure the stars. Set up camp and watch the Earth and Sun. Because the Moon is rotating at exactly the same rate that it orbits the Earth, the Earth won’t budge, no matter how many days, weeks, months, years, or decades you watch it. However, the Sun does move across the sky.
This occurs because when we suspend our disbelief, we generally don’t do so selectively. To make the most of the experience, we enter the world created by the writer, actors, or virtual reality simulations without reservation. Once inside these alternative worlds, we don’t have a mental firewall that keeps evaluating and reminding us what is fact and what is fantasy. At best, that comes later. Tides on these days, when the range between high and low tide is especially low, are called neap tides.
